Fireflies

Family Lampyridae

Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are beetles. Familiar flashing species are only part of this diverse group.

Do all fireflies glow as adults?

No. Some adults communicate using light, while daytime dark fireflies rely on chemical signals.

Why do fireflies flash?

In many flashing species, light signals help adults find mates. Flash patterns can be useful clues, but species identification needs more than a single flash.

Are glow-worms also fireflies?

Some insects called glow-worms belong to the firefly family. The common name can refer to different insects, so context matters.

Try one observation

Watch from an established path at dusk. Count flashes and pauses without using a flash camera or trying to catch the insects.

Observe without handling or collecting. These clues are a starting point, not a confirmed identification.
